It has been a lot of fun this week, hearing stories from students and parents about their summer! Students did a great job getting back in the routine for music class. It was great to start working together again, while beginning with the end in mind.
One thing I enjoyed specifically was seeing students and classes already begin to improve with their singing, from the first to the second class. It helps paint a picture of the students' potential, which is really exciting. Pictured here, Mrs. Newell's first grade class finishes a session of singing, rhythm, and movement.
Welcome back!
All grades had a short intro./review of classical music and composers starting this week, with the "Big 3" of composers (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven) for K-2 and adding in more composers/pieces for upper grades. We discussed some of the basic differences between Mozart and Beethoven, with Mozart having a more defined, or "strict" style of composing where Beethoven's was much more emotional and expressive.Younger students also learned the difference between the conductor and the composer, and we also talked about instrument families. 
1st grade students have started learning about Thailand, through pictures, videos, and songs. Students are learning about the festival of water, called "Loy Kratong" that has English translation to the lyrics, and the "Elephant Song" which is sung in Thai! We had a real treat, as one of our parents came to class and shared with students about Thai culture and customs, and the importance of the Elephant. It's always great to hear our first graders sing, and it will be exciting to see and hear them perform in December!
